As a furniture maker, the functionality of a design is one of my guiding principles. The simplicity, strength, and detail found in Arts & Crafts period furniture design are characteristics that I keep in mind when designing a piece. I am also drawn to an Asian design aesthetic that was implemented very successfully by the California architects, Charles & Henry Greene. I create all of my work by hand in my home studio, using primarily domestic hardwoods and obtain reclaimed/repurposed materials whenever possible. Some recent designs incorporate the use of slate with wood. Most often, I avoid using any metal or manufactured fasteners, and prefer to apply a clear finish to each piece. The inherent characteristics found in a particular wood species should speak for itself and need no further embellishment that would only mask its qualities. While I am often inspired by designs that may be over a century old, I attempt to resurrect them by combining their timelessness with contemporary elements.
